Replacing your car's muffler alone is not enough to open up the restrictive exhaust system and allow the extra airflow that increases performance. Everything that comes before the muffler, where the pressure is greatest and performance potential is highest, will remain tight and congested.
MagnaFlow, an aftermarket exhaust manufacturer, says that its customers can expect horsepower gains of around 10 percent which is a pretty commonly-quoted figure. However, MagnaFlow cautions that this is by no means a guarantee -- the car's overall condition plays a huge role in its performance potential, whether it has other upgrades or not. So don't expect a performance muffler alone to solve all your woes.
Performance mufflers are designed to function best as part of a team effort. Can we talk for a minute about the horrors that are clamp-on fake exhaust tips? No one really believes that a or year-old compact hatchback has a full performance exhaust that's so big, a bodybuilder could insert his arm up the elbow. Especially when the car still sounds terrible -- wheezing like a three-pack-a-day smoker. And what for? To entice competition that the car can't handle?
For the most part, it seems like those days are over Or maybe it's that I'm too old and jaded to notice it anymore. But I've always believed it's better to just drive the car completely stock than to waste money making it look like it has been modified. It was a tacky aspect of car culture back when a considerable segment of the population might have been fooled -- it's even worse now that the trick has run its course. Sign up for our Newsletter!

The performance increased considerably but i want to know if is worth remapping. Will this remap will help the engine to run better with the new accesories? Thank you. Just got a injen cold air intake, Megan header and down pipe, and a custom 2.
What gains would I see crime that? But a tuner, a simple axle-back exhaust, and a cold air kit will add a few horsepower and sound better. I just had the transmission rebuilt at miles.
If I do modifications on the exhaust and the cold air intake will that add more horse power to my car? If so how much extra horse power would it be? Randy — Exhaust and intake are usually good for another horsepower, with smaller engines seeing the lower number, and larger engines seeing the higher number. The vehicle is obviously under powered- especially on hills. The engine has , miles on it and has an extra large cooler for the tranny. Thank You! Just make sure you listen for a loose timing chain.
As far as upgrading your exhaust for more power, it might have a small benefit. I recently bought a Jetta GLI 35th anniversary and will like to make some upgrades. Any recommendations to improve sound and maybe gain a few horsepower or torque? Hey, I have a Infiniti G35x 3. I just got it and was curios as to what mods I should put on it first for better performance. I was thinking of getting a cold air intake, a performance chip and a exhaust. As well as suspension for handling.
Are there ones that you would prioritize over the other and how much horsepower and torque do you think these mods would add?
Also is there a specific exhaust that you would recommend, I was thinking a AKR catback dual split exhaust. As far as suspension, a good set of shocks along with an anti-roll bar can make a huge difference at a low cost. If you go for a coilover set, even better. You can tune your car without the upgrades such as exhaust and cold air intake. But you will have to retune once you do install these because updates to your tune when these are installed will need to be installed.
Better to install the upgrades first then tune your car.. Heard Magnaflow offers the highest HP gains. Hello, thanks for the info guys. So I have a Honda Accord and just did the whole exhaust system, from headers to muffler.
My headers are from Megan racing and the rest of exhaust is from tuning lab, but I have a catalyst converter in it. Would that affect the gain of horse power? As if rn the car seems to not have gained any hp, if anything is the whole opposite of what it was before. I do have a performance air filter. Would I need to get it programmed.

If you need the energy of the heat to power something in a car for example, a turbocharger , it makes sense that you want to keep as much of that heat as possible. An exposed exhaust radiates heat, and this is energy that otherwise could be harvested. Heat is bad for your intake. If your engine bay is super hot, your intake temperatures will increase. Heat-wrapping the exhaust in some cases can reduce the engine bay temperature, and reject more of that heat out of the exhaust pipe instead.
As the exhaust cools it slows down. Keeping the exhaust temperatures high keeps the velocity high, and this improves exhaust scavenging. Sort by Best Sort by Latest. Show Comments.
