When wind moves across the island and on those parts wherein there is a lack of vegetation, it causes the formation of dunes and hills on the island. The south-easterly winds that hit the island each year result in a growth of 1 to 2 meters on the dunes and hills each year. These hills and dunes can reach a maximum of meters in height. As for the differently colored sands, those are the result of thousands of years of conglomeration with clay.
And the presence of a mineral pigment known as hematite causes the sand to bind and harden like cement , which explains how steep cliffs had formed. As mentioned earlier, Fraser Island consists of the largest collection of perched lakes in the world. There are more than freshwater lakes on the island. It is second only to the state of Tasmania in terms of the number of lakes in Australia.
Lake Mckenzie is the most popular of these lakes, which is a perched lake measuring at hectares in land area. However, there is a little nutrient and high pH level on this lake and many other perched lakes on Fraser Island. For this reason, many species are unable to find a habitat in these lakes, not just Lake McKenzie. The champagne pools were glorious for wading, even for the most inexperienced swimmer. Lake McKenzie is an amazingly clear freshwater lake which is also excellent for swimming. As for wildlife, I had the pleasure of seeing wild brumbies on the beach. There were also many dingoes on the island. They were a bit of a nuisance and were especially out and about when they could smell food.
I was most fortunate to meet 7 other individuals at a hostel in Hervey Bay who shared the expenses of renting a 4WD and food. When you go, be prepared for the possibility of inclement weather, as the cheapest way to stay on the island is by camping.

There are sand dunes, freshwater lakes with sand so fine you can polish your jewellery if you have any with it, long white beaches, the purest breed of dingoes in Australia we saw a whole lot of dingo puppies , crystal creeks and rivers you can drink from while you swim. This is truly Paradise! A truly glorious place. This must be one of the most unique spots on the entire planet. I loved the time I spent there and desparately hope to visit again.
