You're probably not too fond of the Cavern of Souls. Do you find the disgusting and perverse art of countering spells to be both disgusting and perverse? You probably like Cavern of Souls and how your opponent's know-it-all grin quickly morphs into a drained and lifeless look when you plop this bad boy on the table.
Nothing feels better than seeing that glimmer of hope drain from their eyes. I've experienced the unbridled joy of being on both sides of the aisle on this one. For players like myself, Cavern of Souls naming Beast followed by Thragtusk was my anthem for an entire year of Standard. Beast, conveniently, is also the creature type for Craterhoof Behemoth , and I think we know how that story ends.
Well, fine, I'll spell it out. It ends with them dead 10 times over the turn you cast an uncounterable Craterhoof Behemoth. Happy now? But for every uncounterable Thragtusk I've shoved into open mana, I've also had the distinct displeasure of being on the opposite side of Cavern of Souls. As one of "those people," alternatively known as "scum," who play Miracles in Legacy, I've made the acquaintance of Cavern of Souls from the other side of the field of battle and it really drains my Force of Will to continue playing the game.
Let's just say I would have gotten away with countering that Sanctum Prelate if it wasn't for those meddling kids who later became game developers that got jobs at Wizards of the Coast where they worked their way up the ladder until eventually being part of the Avacyn Restored design team just so they could print Cavern of Souls to mess up my intricately laid plans.
P erhaps you've heard conversation lately about a ruling involving Cavern of Souls. Why don't I start with the current ruling and what you need to know, and then I'll step back and talk about some of the thinking behind these actions.
If you control Cavern of Souls , and you cast a creature spell of the chosen type, the presumption is that you activated the second ability. The spell can't be countered. As the controller of Cavern of Souls , it is your responsibility to make sure the card is clearly visible no stacking under other lands, your elbows, etc. You don't have to expressly say anything when casting the creature spell, but your opponent has the right to ask you to clarify your actions at any time.
If you control more than one Cavern of Souls , it is your responsibility to make sure it is clear what creature types you have named for each of them. If, for whatever reason, you want to activate Cavern of Soul's first ability and leave your creature spell vulnerable to counter Magic , you must explicitly say this as you cast the spell.
If you're going to an event in the near future and you have further questions, please make sure to ask the judge staff at that event. In my mind, the most important thing Wizards of the Coast that's us can do for our players that's you, but also us is make Magic fun and appealing. Dark Depths has fallen largely out of favour.
Pact of Negation is used in some fringe combo decks and Hive Mind. Goblin Charbelcher is used in exactly one deck. I'd say you'll win out at least until Innistrad block rotates. Cavern of Souls and Restoration Angel are huge cards in Standard right now. Hell, Modern probably likes those cards too. Save your valediction, Steiner. We will live to see another day.
User Info: ellis It doesn't care too much about Angel outside of a couple of combo decks, and Cavern doesn't see too much play outside of a couple of random times generally Delver decks that run quite a few Humans. And the trade is skewed in the favor of the Maze of Ith in the long run.
Right now it's even, but Cavern won't hold near as much value after it rotates, and Restoration Angel will all but die out the moment it leaves standard. User Info: AllstarJason. Restoration Angel will all but die out the moment it leaves standard. It sees play in Modern Naya Pod so it should retain some value. User Info: jonicthechao4. Here's the Top 5 of pesky problems and egregious grievances. Good lands in Modern have never been cheap. However, in recent years some lands that were once cheap are now very expensive.
Today MTGTavern looks at five lands printed in sets like Time Spiral or Avacyn Restored that you could have, like in one case, bought for the price of a Burger but instead now you have to pay much more!
Field of the Dead has been terrorizing a bunch of different formats in Magic over the past year, and it got itself banned from several.
Recently, to the surprise of many, it has also had an increasingly meaningful impact on Modern. Let's explore the various Field shells that currently populate the format. How have Modern decks changed in recent months? We'll answer that question on this episode of Nuts and Bolts. For at least one year now, Eldrazi Tron has stuck around the top of the meta as one of the most successful decks in Modern. It's not even getting much support with new sets, yet it seldom, if ever, falls from tier one status.
Basically, any time is a good time to smash with Eldrazi, and this is no exception. That may soon change, however, as Core Set provides us with a Goblin that was cause for much hype already and caused an older card to spike.
How about a combo kill on turn three? Like a bird, you're free to see the boundless face of the earth. Let the wind blow you like a kite and glide away. Ikoria 's infamous companion mechanic has changed Magic as we knew it.
Learn about the decks that have been successful on the first weekend and how to use them. In case you missed it, the biggest monsters of all time are waiting for you in the next Magic set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths.
If you need someone's advice facing them, Vivien Reid is the perfect companion for this journey. Today we are reviewing the main protagonist's new card and its future applications. Ikoria 's new ability companion adds a touch of the Commander experience to regular Magic. You can reveal one companion from your sideboard before each game, if your presented deck matches the card's specified restriction, and then cast it from there once during that game.
Let's look at implications and decks. After several months of a Modern metagame dominated by Once Upon a Time, everyone who didn't manage to squeeze it into their deck can rejoice. Its power level has proved the card worthy of a ban, and it's now leaving the format. Read on to find out in which direction the new Modern may be headed. The Modern main event of Cardmarket Series Paris this past weekend was the perfect opportunity to witness a fresh metagame in action and in its first steps of evolution.
We did see many decks we somewhat didn't expect, not just within the second half of the Top 16, but also among the first half. Before Commander caught on, players had already been enjoying a singleton format for years. It was named Highlander — originally for the catchphrase of the cult classic which stipulates that "There can be only one," but the format also seems to want to live forever.
It looked like an overpowered card during spoiler season and caused an outcry among some players. But what has happened to Echo of Eons now, half a year after the release of Modern Horizons? What Legacy decks has it enabled, where has it found a home? It's time to take inventory! Dredge claims the trophy among eighteen players, defeating a planeswalker-heavy midrange brew in the finals.
Let's take a look at all the Top 8 lists, see how the format changed after the restriction of Narset, and explore the latest developments.
Modern is a hotbed of variety and the Cardmarket Series Prague metagame was no different. The Top 16 alone featured 14 different decks and proved again that Modern is the most diverse of all Constructed format. Let's take a closer look at the state of Modern after Throne of Eldraine and Stoneforge Mystic have settled in.
As usual, the Modern field at the most recent stop of the Cardmarket Series was the most diverse. The Top 16 featured no less than 15 different archetypes! Let's take a look at the best of what the format has to offer now, after the departure of Hogaak and Faithless Looting plus the addition of Stoneforge Mystic. The most important thing when trying to build a tribal deck is redundancy. Whatever your strategy, you need enough redundancy to ensure your tribal synergy is consistent.
Kind of like Jund The Modern ban list is a maximum security prison with 34 inmates, some of which could potentially pose a serious threat to the meta. In this ongoing series, we're reviewing each of those offenders to see if they're eligible for parole.
This time it's the turn of the green storm enabler. In a Modern metagame defined by Faithless Looting and Ensnaring Bridge, a deck that disrupts the opponent while applying pressure might be the key to victory.
We'll go through a current decklist, discuss interesting slots in the deck to beat the meta and walk through the two most important matchups. Sometimes it's cool to build a deck around a small tribe that doesn't invite linear strategies — something that was actually true of Ooze until Ravnica Allegiance changed their slimy game for good. The Modern ban list is a maximum security prison with KCI update!
This time it's the turn of the evil queen of the tokens. With Mono-Red aggro lighting up the stage in Standard, I want to take a look this week at what makes the aggro archetype tick. By breaking down and examining how these decks are built to be powerful, we can begin to understand why there will almost always be aggressive decks running around any given format!
Happy New Year, and welcome back! There's plenty of speculation about what this format will look like, but I won't be bringing you any today in my article. Instead, I want to offer a suggestion: the "Standard-Plus" format, as it is currently referred to by Wizards of the Coast, should be a singleton format in the interest of the health of the format. Ultimate Masters is going to be the last event release celebrating 25 years of Magic in , and possibly the final set in the Masters series.
We're looking at all these reprints to see what they bring to the UMA experience and the secondary market; now it's time to end the exploration with green and colorless.
