After them are the Vaishya caste , who are business people. And after them are the Sudra, who are the common peasants and workers. Below these four castes there are casteless, the untouchables.
The four castes were not allowed to have any physical contact with the untouchables. Each caste is divided into many sub-castes. The religious word for caste is Varna and for sub-caste Jat or Jati. But sometimes in English the term caste is used in both cases. Religiously, people are born in a caste and it cannot be changed. Each caste has some compulsory duties, which its members must do. Each caste has professional limits which decides what profession each caste can follow.
Each caste members can have social relations only with its caste members. Religiously this includes marraige and even eating only with caste members. Please note that socially the caste system is different from the religious form of caste system. How did Hinduism originated is a difficult question. The accepted theory is that Hinduism was evolved after the historical meeting between the Aryans and Dravidians.
Some claim that Hinduism is mainly an Aryan culture whereas the others claim that it is mainly a Dravidian culture. Religiously the Vedas were given by Brahma. Before Hinduism there existed another religion in India called Brahmanism and its followers were called Brahmans. The Brahmans were the spiritual and moral guides of the Indian society. The members of this religion were a close sect and others could not join it.
One of the reasons the Brahmans accepted others to their religion was the fear to loose their status as moral guides to priests of a new religion that started in India, namely Buddhism. The Brahmans even accepted Buddha as a Hindu God and part of his teachings and philosophy like non-violence into their religion.

She began severe austerities, meditating naked in the harsh elements, eating nothing. Shiva was very impressed and accepted her as a wife. She inspired him to care about the world again.
So she formed a little boy from clay and breathed life into him. She instructed him not to let anyone in while she bathed. A little while later Shiva returned and was furious that the boy at the door would not let him in to see his wife. Parvati came rushing out and was horrified by what Shiva had done.
She told him that this was their son. Full of remorse, Shiva hurried to find a replacement head and a young elephant was the first creature he came across.
Parvati has a role in the famous churning of the ocean story also. When Shiva swallows the poison that the churning released, Parvati rushes in to catch hold of his throat. She prevents him from swallowing the poison and it stays in his throat, turning it blue. There are many different styles of picture of Parvati. Often she can be seen as the family woman, with Shiva at her side and young Ganesha in her lap.
Other times she is in the form of Durga: dressed in red, riding a lion, her arms full of weapons. One of her forms, Durga, is the warrior and protector goddess. She rides astride a ferocious tiger, charging into battle and destroying evil. Her many arms hold weapons like a trident and a discus, as well as the lotus blossom and a conch shell. Communities of Punjabi Hindus praise Durga with jagratas , an all-night ritual in which they sing bhajans , or Hindu holy songs, for the goddess.
She is worshipped as a mother to all, often called Durga Ma. And since oral tradition holds that Durga Ma has been known to walk the Earth as a little girl giving out blessings, children—especially little girls—are often worshipped in these communities as the representation of the goddess. Another form, Kali, is the creator and destroyer goddess. Her blood-soaked sword cuts the bonds of ignorance and ego, which are represented by the severed head she holds in one of her many hands.
Though she looks fearsome and full of bloodlust, she is also Mother Nature herself. Kali represents the time before this world existed, when all was blackness.
